Carleen Newsome has a Masters degree in
Community Counseling from North Georgia College and State University and
is a member of the American Counseling Association. She is currently
under the Supervision of David Smith, director of The Summit Counseling
Center, as she works towards full licensure.
Prior to joining the Summit Counseling
Center, Carleen worked at Center Point Christian Counseling Center where
she specialized in women and family issues. She believes in a
client/counselor team approach and feels it is her job to furnish
clients with the tools and support necessary to achieve their individual
goals while minimizing the barriers to success. The focus is on
creating solutions. She often uses solution focused and narrative
therapy, both of which are based on the optimistic assumption that
people can enhance their lives once they recognize their own abilities
and identify their strengths.
Carleen currently leads social skills
groups, and social skills summer camps at The Summit. Her groups run
once a week for six weeks, twice a year. The groups are broken out in
different age groups and serve children in grades K-8th. The
social skills program has been designed to be fun and highly interactive
for the children. Its uses a variety of hands on activities such as
specialized games, video clips, journaling, stories and role plays to
help facilitate the children to learn and practice the tools needed to
respond effectively in daily situations. These groups are designed to
help children acquire the skills to reach their fullest potential
socially, emotionally and academically.
